Novel Writing: Five Secrets Of Success
by Steve Dempster
Have you ever wondered, as you sit at your keyboard, if there are any secrets to successful novel writing? Well there are - and here are five of them. Remember these secrets and your novel writing will improve overnight!
To call the points below ’secrets’ is perhaps to invest them with too great an air of mystery, yet it seems that so many words of advice are looked on as ’secrets’ nowadays that I thought ’what the heck? Go with the flow - call them secrets. Why not?’I’ll tell you why not. Because it isn’t fair. The ’secrets’ I’m about to tell you aren’t secrets at all - just good, solid advice that’s been proven on the writing mill time after time. So, when next you read some sales blurb offering to tell you ’secrets’ that will absolutely guarantee your success and turn you into an A-list writer - remember me. Remember these five points. Remember that the writer’s road is a hard and rocky one. And especially remember that that road is the best road ever made!
Point One: Adopt a professional attitude towards your work.
Does this seem obvious? Of course it does - and yet you would be amazed at how many people write ’when they can’ or ’when the mood takes them’. If you are one of these people, you need to change this mental attitude right now - and I do mean right now. Unless you are another Hemingway or Joyce you will not succeed with such an approach. Set aside a regular time to work - then stick to it. Period.
Point Two: Identify your target market.
Who will you write for? By this I mean what section of the reading public. A good thing to keep in mind is that you are more likely to be successful writing books on the subject your read yourself - romance or sci-fi for example - than forcing yourself to write in a genre unknown to you just because it seems to sell well.
Point Three: Self-belief.
This is one thing that - unfortunately - no-one can teach you, yet it is one of the most important things that any writer can possess. Indeed, without self-belief it is highly unlikely that you will ever really ’make it’ as a writer. Why? Simply because writing is a tough game and only the strong survive. A writer’s strength lies in mental, rather than physical, toughness but it’s toughness just the same. Cultivate this strength at every opportunity.
Point Four: Support.
I’ve said this before in other articles and make no apology for saying it here - having the support of your family is of huge importance. If they understand that you are treating this writing business seriously and that you need to have set times in which to work then this will be of immense help to you. If they then go the extra mile and root for you at all times, well, you’re halfway there!
Point Five: Rejection.
This is perhaps the most dreaded aspect of writing for many would-be authors - the awful ’pink slip’ of the rejection letter. What you must realise is that rejection is not a personal slight. Publishing is a business and all that rejection means is that your story or book doesn’t fit with what that editor wants at that moment. Many writers in fact have a ’rejection selection’ that they keep to one side and resubmit at regular intervals. After all, times change - and so do editors!
So - five short ’secrets’ that, if you keep them in mind and more importantly act upon them, will always help you along the way to being a published writer. No guarantees, though - anyone who offers you those is someone you really shouldn’t listen to!

SLS Currently reading : Sex in the Sanctuary By Lutishia Lovely Release date: 01 February, 2007 |
SLS Intimate Conversations Showcase
Recently Ella Curry, CEO of EDC Creations (www.edc-creations.com) and founder of the Sankofa Literary Society (www.sankofaliterarysociety.org) had the opportunity to talk with the author of book Sex In The Sanctuary and Love Like Hallelujah, Lutishia Lovely
Tell us your latest news?
Oh my goodness!!! I just found out that my first novel, Sex In The Sanctuary, was on MosaicBooks bestseller list for all of 2007! And that it also was a regular bestseller at Black Expressions Book Club. So I am very excited about seeing the latest release, Love Like Hallelujah, enjoy even greater success!
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
While I've written off and on since junior high school, I think the label felt legit when my first professional piece, a stageplay called Knowledge - Or What, was actually produced. In addition to writing it, I also co-starred. The show did well and got good reviews.
What inspired you to pen your first novel?
Honestly, Spirit. See this title, Passion In The Pews, dropped in my head years ago. I had just finished writing a stageplay and tried to do the same with this idea. It went nowhere. Fast forward a few years and after finishing yet another project I asked Spirit, "what am I supposed to do now?" Clear as day came the answer: "Sex In The Sanctuary...and it's a book."
Who or what has influenced your writing, and in what way?
I think everyone I've ever met, seen, heard or felt is somehow contributing to my work. Of course, life itself is a wonderful source of information and inspiration. For instance, not only did I literally grow up in church but I'm also a preacher's kid, so the "Hallelujah Love" series is a very easy one for me to write.
How has your environment/upbringing colored your writing?
I am blessed to have experienced and continue to enjoy a very rich, culturally, socially and geographically diverse life journey and it allows me to relate to a wide variety of situations. I've travelled extensively, forty states, over a dozen countries, and even lived in Israel for six months. My work background has been diverse, from radio personality to magazine editor. I've lived in almost all-White towns and in mostly-Black urban communites. So really, I feel more like a global citizen, than I do any label that would tie me into one place or even ethnicity.
What are your current projects?
I just finished book three in the Hallelujah Love series, A Preacher's Passion, AND my first romance novel, Lies Lovers Tell, which comes out in October under the pseudonym Zuri Day. I'm also working with a friend on a non-fiction project about living ones dreams. So...lot's going on y'all - and I'm grateful!
Do you have any plans outside of novel writing?
Actually I do, when I can find the time! My agent is actively shopping the Hallelujah Love series for conversion to film and I also have soundtrack ideas for both novels; original songs in which part of the lyrics appear in the books. I also have a stageplay idea that is SOOOO good!!! I wrote it years ago and hope to one day soon be able to focus on getting it produced. But I'm already contracted for at least four more books so....we'll see...
Do you feel that the explosion in African-American writers is a fad or another renaissance?
Definitely another renaissance. We've re-discovered the Black voice and it is stronger, more vibrant, and more diverse than ever! There is so much talent out here, so many creative storylines and genres to choose from when it comes to Black works. All of my fellow penners make me proud to spell my name w-r-i-t-e-r!!!
Do you feel more African-Americans are reading?
If not, how can we help increase this. While I think the number of African-American readers are increasing, I wish it were more. Reading is such a wonderful, inexpensive yet creative way to be entertained. I think to increase these numbers it has to start early, in the home, with children who are 4, 5, 6 years old and on. The earlier the habit of reading is instilled, the deeper will be the love. And I can tell you from personal experience - that love will last a lifetime!
What advice would you give someone who wants to write a book.
I'd tell them to stop thinking about it and "just do it." Get on a computer and start writing whatever you have: an idea, an outline, an incident, whatever. The more you write, the more that will flow. Then I'd encourage them to join a writer group or take a college course, anything to get you in the atmosphere of your dream. Lastly the internet is a wealth of information. You can just google "write a book" and about a million choices will pop up with folk trying to tell you how to make it do what it do! But bottom line, if you want to be a writer...WRITE!

"One Love, the new novel by Bill Holmes, is a hip, breezy look at the inner workings of the spoken word scene, complete with on and off stage drama! Bill's insight into the feminine mind and issues of "real" life behind the scenes draws us into trials of love, loss and adversity. Bill does this with sensitivity as we root for the characters to realize the desires of their hearts. After you read One Love, check out an open mic and put this read to work! One Love captures the spirit of the spoken word scene because Bill is true poetry."

"Think Love Jones. Think funky jazz and poetry readings in dimly lit cafes and clubs. Think an amalgamation of poetry, friendship, and love and you'll get an idea of what Bill Holmes' novel offers.
Regina is dealing with trifling men, health problems, and boredom when she meets the handsome poet, Chris. Instant attraction and consecutive chance meetings ensue, and Chris and Regina hit it off right away. However, Regina is distracted by her health problems, girlfriend drama, and a past love, while Chris confronts family ties. Will their love of poetry and music be enough to clear the way for their love to bloom?
While the pace of ONE LOVE isn't particularly breathtaking, I enjoyed the characterizations and the embedded morals. Holmes includes poems, but not to the point of distraction; the poems actually enhanced the story. I recommend this book for anyone wanting a break from drama for the sake of drama."

"In One Love, Bill Holmes' fictional debut, Chris Harrington is a victim of Corporate America by day and a talented poet by night. Anxious about a possible merger between his employer and another company, Chris already has his hands full without the added drama coming from Ronnie, his girlfriend of three months. Dealing with her outbursts and jealousy of his co-workers and even of his poetry, he decides enough is enough and they need some time apart. Chance encounters with Regina, the sharp-dressed accountant who catches his eye every morning on the train, helps him make a clean break.
Regina Simmons, the beautiful and sassy professional, is a talented singer and poet in her own right. Regina has dealings with an ex that have not only pulled her away from the poetry scene, but also make it difficult for her to give her all to a new relationship. Can Chris and Regina find their way through their own emotional roller coasters and learn to ride this wave of words and love together?
One Love is a refreshing read. Bill Holmes has created characters that are easy to love and cheer for. Secondary characters are just as great. You are sure to laugh-out-loud at some points and even shed a tear in others. One Love is a well-written novel and the poetry included in the story is the icing on the cake. Love, family, friends and beautiful word play make this story a hit. This is surely a recommended read, especially for anyone who loves poetry and the poetry scene."

Meet Vanessa Morton, a strong, independent woman destined for ministry or as some would see it, simply an heir to her daddy's pulpit. Then there's Pastor Willie Green, the attentive and compassionate pastor of the traditional Harvest Baptist Church. By mutual acquaintances, two pastors oftwo independent churches meet and God's vision enters the picture. Soon and Very Soon is a story of triumph and faith. It tells the story of a woman demanding respect as a female of the cloth and not settling for less, it is a story of a woman realizing that she can still grow spiritually herself at the same time she is charged to minister to others. It is the story of the test of a man's faith and trust in God. What happens when members of the church don't see a pastor's vision, what happens when a church divides, what do churches experience when memberships combine? Read Soon and Very Soon and you'll find out just what a feat like this entails. Can Vanessa bea supportive wife? Will she takea backseat to her husband? Will Willie ever stop worrying or stop long enough to spend time with his wfe? Good supporting characters Keisha, Paul and Deacon Charley Thompson help the story along. All the characters learn through obedience and faith, that God will make a way.

Heading: Let No Man Put Asunder
Author Sherryle Kiser Jackson penned a christian fiction story, sharing with readers what it really means to become one as man and wife. The marriage of Pastor Green and Pastor Morton included natural family members as well as the transitioning of two church families merging together to become one.
Pastor Willie Green and Harvest Baptist Church were used to their traditional services while Pastor Vanessa Morton and Mt. Pleasant Baptist church were contemporary, causing doubts and an uprising with some of the members of Harvest Baptist church when the couple met and were married. God gave the couple the vision to merge both ministries and before anything concrete could take place, all hell broke loose at Harvest.
Through the marriage transition, after being single for so long, both pastors learned important lessons that would also help them in moving forward with the vision for the churches. With all the doubts, negative words, gossip and blatant defiance, would both churches be able to come together in love and unity?
Author Jackson wrote a story with just enough detail to grab my interest and apply biblical teachings in the situations that the pastors and their congregations went through. Her characters were well rounded, and her ability to make them come alive was a plus for me. I especially loved the way she depicted one of the deacons in particular, and you can best bet there will be a follow-up to Soon and Very Soon because of him.
I recommend this book to those who are struggling with what it means to be one in marriage because what was shared was very insightful and helpful.

WHEN I'M WITH YOU is a quick and enjoyable read, and Ms. Taylor-Jones handled a distasteful subject well.
