Devoted wife and mother Georgia Brown is fed up with her marriage to radio personality Marvelous Marvin-and not just because she suspects he's cheating. Meet Cheryl Robinson
After graduating from the famed Cass Technical High School, native Detroiter Cheryl Robinson headed for D.C. where she attended Howard University for two years before returning to Detroit to complete her business degree from Wayne State University. It was at Wayne State where she discovered her passion for writing when a last minute decision to enroll in a fiction writing class opened Cheryl's imagination for creating memorable characters.

In 2001, shortly after the death of her only brother Benjamin Jr., Cheryl completed her first novel, Memories of Yesterday, which was dedicated to his memory. The following year Cheryl self-published Memories of Yesterday. And in 2003, her second novel When I Get Free. In 2004, after acquiring a literary agent, she landed her first book deal with New American Library (NAL) a division of The Penguin Group, a major publishing company based in New York that re-released Memories of Yesterday in 2005 under the title If It Ain't One Thing with the sequel It's Like That also published by NAL the following year.

Two more book deals followed; one with HarperCollins Publishing company for the anthology These Are My Confessions in which Cheryl penned the novella Strapped, which will be released in July 2007 and another novel with Penguin (NAL) entitled Sweet Georgia Brown, which will be released in December 2007.

Aside from Detroit, Cheryl has also had the opportunity to live in Syracuse, Kansas City, Dallas, and Orlando, but so far her novels have all been set in the city that she knows the best--Detroit.

The first bell has just rung to start the freshman year for Kendra Hayes, Lamar Adams, Destiny Jameson, and Steven Phillips. The four of them share feelings of excitement and uncertainty, but they walk the hallways of Carter G. Woodson High School with a different focus, or perspective, in mind.
 
An excellent student, Kendra is focused on making good grades in high school. She is also determined to make a name for herself at Woodson and not be known as Malcolm Hayes' little sister. Her classes, the basketball team, and other activities will keep Kendra busy. Soon after Kendra starts school, she is invited for membership in a high school sorority. Kendra's invitation alters her perceptions of others and herself.
 
Lamar's focus is to make the basketball team and have as much fun as possible in high school. He also wouldn't mind meeting as many girls as he can. After all, he knew that girls want to have fun too. At home, Lamar's goal is to get his mother to honor her promise to him. Standing up to his mother challenges Lamar as well as his relationship with her and his stepfather, but Lamar is determined to regain what he lost.
 
Destiny is focused on maintaining her superiority over everyone around her. Rich and beautiful, Destiny is perfect and is determined to make sure everyone believes that. Isolated in her perfect world, Destiny is all alone until she meets a popular senior who invites her to join her sorority. Destiny is excited to be asked and looks forward to kicking up her superiority a notch. But Destiny's condescending attitude might jeopardize her membership in the sorority.
 
New to Charlotte, Steven is focused on shaking off his past. His parents' life of crime stripped Steven and his brothers of having a childhood. Lessons surround Steven at school and at home, but he is committed to making his new beginnings with his foster parents a happy ending. As a member of the JV football team, Steven has another outlet to direct his energy.
 
Freshman year is tough, but these four are intent on finding their way as they navigate the hallways, demands from teachers, tests, extra curricular activities, friendships, and parents. They have to navigate their journey all while maintaining their focus on what's important to them.

Positive, Uplifting Book for Black Teens

The freshman year of high school can be a stressful, frightening time for teens. They have to learn their new roles as freshmen, they have to figure out where they fit in, they have to deal with making new friends, and just as important, they have to figure out who they are as individuals. All of these struggles, and more, are explored in the first book of Carla Sarratt's Carter G. Woodson High series, FRESHMAN FOCUS.
 
In FRESHMAN FOCUS, we are introduced to an eclectic group of students: Kendra, a strong-willed girl with a good family and a good head on her shoulders who learns that people - including herself - can change for the good; Lamar - Kendra's best friend, a clown in the classroom but a heavy-hearted boy at home as he continues to deal with his father's passing; Destiny, the beautiful, stuck up, spoiled brat of the clan whose picture-perfect life isn't as shiny and happy as she makes everyone believe; and Steven, a student new to Charlotte and new to the world of having a good family structure as his parents are criminals and currently doing time in jail. All of them, through their first taste of high school, experience growing pains that change them, motivate them, and aspire them to be better than who they were when they first walked into Carter G. Woodson High School.
 
I really enjoyed this novel for several reasons. It is a book that illustrates the importance of black history, of black culture - in all its positive light. Sarratt starts each chapter with a moment in black history, these positive affirmations that seem to permeate the high school, the students, their families, and their community. It's wonderful to read a book that makes you feel good, makes you feel that the stereotypes that bind a culture aren't as strong as you might think. I also enjoyed Sarratt's weaving of student assignments in the story. It was a creative way to let the reader into the minds of the students without merely telling us everything. Despite the number of characters in the novel, Sarratt is able to seamlessly move us from character to character, using distinct voices and characteristics for each character.
 
There are moments where the reader will laugh, they are moments where the reader will cry, and there are moments where the reader will think. When a writer is able to make you feel a gamut of emotions such as these, I'd say that's a book worth reading.
 
I'm connected with these characters, and I look forward to reading the next book in Sarratt's series.
