INTERVIEW with Cheryl Lacey-Donovan
AAKultureZone.com :: Written Voices
Listen to my Black Author Network Podcast Women What the Hell Were You Thinking
Cheryl, describe yourself for our visitors.
I am the daughter of a southern Baptist pastor. I am a mother and a wife. I have loved to serve people all of my life. Professionally, I am an educator, a mentor, an author, and an internet radio talk show host. I also write a syndicated magazine column entitled Worth More Than Rubies.
God has given me a heart for women who are struggling with life's trials and tribulations because even when we can't diagnose our problems, God's word can bring us healing and wholeness. This is the message that I want to bring to all women. I want them to understand that until they fall in love with Jesus, the chains of sin and bondage will never be broken.
I too had to learn this lesson and I hope to inspire, empower, and encourage others to live in the favor of God daily.
How do you find time to connect with God?
By studying the Word. You must pick up a bible and fully engross yourself in its power. I ask God each day to light a fire for His Word in my heart. Jesus reveals Himself more and more as we seek Him.
A solid prayer life is the key to emotional and spiritual growth. Only when you have learned how to pray to God do you find true peace.
Who are your favorite authors? Favorite books?
Some of my favorite authors include seasoned authors like Maya Angelou, Lorraine Hansberry, Toni Morrison, Terry McMillan, Alice Walker, and Nikki Giovani. I also like some of the new lesser known authors like Linda Beed, Kendra Norman Bellamy, Talayah Stovall, and others
Tell us about your journey to publication.
My journey to publication was an unexpected one. I just told my husband one day that I was going to write a book. It had been placed on my heart and I went for it. I had no knowledge of the publishing industry, but God in His divine providence had everything worked out for me when I got there.
Tell us about your current book?
My current book is Women What the Hell are You Thinking: An Inspirational Guide to becoming a Virtuous Woman of God.
How did you come up with ideas for this book?
I have had the opportunity to advise many women so I get my ideas from experiences that I've had, as well as the experiences of other people that have crossed my path. I questioned whether or not the stories that I had inside of me were worthy of becoming a book, so after I began writing, I would approach perfect strangers in coffee shops, and other places, and ask them to read a few pages of a book that I was thinking about writing. I got almost the same response from women, and men of all ages and races. They said my material flowed, and that it was intriguing, and they couldn't wait to buy a finished product.
List your other books.
I have another book coming out in May entitled Mother's What the Hell are You Thinking: The Ministry of Motherhood.
What is next for you?
Currently, I spend a lot of time working on my internet radio show Worth More Than Rubies which airs on www.redchurchradio.com each Friday at 11:00am CST.
We plan to convert the talk show into a cable television program in the near future.
The remainder of my time is spent traveling the country speaking on issues that affect the African American Community in general and African American Women in particular

The Journey
by Niama Leslie Williams, Ph.D.
What does it mean to be young, Black, female, intelligent, gifted with second sight, on your way to a Ph.D. and in love for the first time? The Journey presents us with exactly this young woman. The pivotal question becomes is she sane and he deceitful, or has she lost her mind? The answer is both. Not an easy, cohesive ride, the narrative thread of an African American female mystic falling deeply in love with a white psychiatrist is complicated by a gently suggested history of abuse, graduate school, and the subtle racism of still largely white academia. The Journey strokes the American psyche from within a very personal story of love and vision: she is in love; he is not, but he leads her in a merry dance, never quite revealing what emotion lies behind his warm brown eyes.

Famous Faces
by Niama Leslie Williams, Ph.D.
Chris Abani. Barry Manilow. Wynton Marsalis. Jerry Quickley. Jody Kuykendall. The already famous and the one on her way up. Articles in the newspaper, paparazzi bait, sought out for the alumni newsletter, for international halls of fame, for Pulitzers, Emmys, Grammys; recipients of some, winners of many.
But what of the poet, toiling away in her room, alone, who watches, understands, yet never feels a part of their world? What of the poet who watches their performances, sees beneath their words, their music, imagines the pain that created the art, uses her understanding to convince herself to, yes, live one more day, but that one day, that particular day, makes another choice?

Robin "Robbie" Ayele
From Chocolate City Chronicles comes my deepest, innermost thoughts...giving you a taste of my sweet words...
Big Lips
cooling the glossy surface
of my onion soup,
they ain't thin nor hardly invisible.
naw, they're out there
for the world to see.
yeah, no injections or collagen.
i was born with them.
they're all me.
lush and luscious,
nothing i would wanna hide
because there ain't no downside.
no, they're on my face,
coated a brick house red.
yeah that's right
enough said.

Do you remember those summer cookouts? Or the family reunions playing spades in the back yard? Or do you recognize that your full lips and wide hips are something truly to behold no matter what the media outlets tell you? Well then you are ready for my book. A labor of love, Chocolate City Chronicles celebrates who we are as Americans of African descent. It is often in your face, cutting edge poetic prose focusing on the beauty and pain existing in urban communities from DC to Detroit...to sum it up, a bit of dark chocolate to nibble on...sweet and bitter.
Peace and keep the faith
