Pat G’Orge-Walker delivers a wickedly funny, uplifting novel of love and betrayal…good karma and bad karma…sin and redemption
Chyna and her sister Janelle are always moments away from a catfight. They love each other, but Janelle has never forgiven her sister for swiping her first love, Cordell. That was ages ago, and now Chyna is showing off as the First Lady of New Hope Assembly, a church that’s caught between the old ways of Holiness and new ways of serving its community. New Hope’s leader, Reverend Grayson Young, is also caught…in the infamous Sweet Bush lounge, an establishment well-known for adult pleasures.
With the church congregation running wild in the aftermath of her husband’s scandalous behavior, Chyna turns to her sister Janelle for guidance. But if Chyna thinks she’s getting sympathy from Janelle, she’d better think again, because Janelle’s got her own crisis. And when Cordell suddenly comes back into the sisters’ lives, what follows are squabbling, chaos, and surprises that show just how hard the road to salvation really is…

Ella: Tell us about your passion for writing. Why do you write? What drives you?
I believe my love for words play an integral part in my passion for writing. I need to write as much as I need air to breathe. It is like being constantly pregnant and needing to deliver.
Ella: Finish this sentence- My writing offers the following legacy to future readers...
...permission to be different in the face of naysayers. There were times when I was faced with the challenge of delivering God's message through humor. Of course, laughter, although permitted through scripture, didn't seem to connect with those staunch Saintly folks. Never let anyone step on your creativity when your creativity is to enlighten and provide entertainment.
Ella: Where are you from? How did you start your writing journey?
I am from Mount Vernon, New York. My writing journey began in elementary school and was mentored by my third grade teacher, Ms. Bobbie Madison.
Ella: Give us the synopsis of the book being discussed, Somebody's Sinning In My Bed.

And when Cordell suddenly comes back into the sisters’ lives, what follows are squabbling, chaos, and surprises that show just how hard the road to salvation really is…
Ella: Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?
The main characters in my book are two sisters; Chyna and Janelle. What I like about Chyna is that she finally resolves to not think less of herself than God does. What I like about Janelle is her fire. Janelle's a person who loves deeply and that makes her dangerous on several levels. However, Janelle is also able to suck on a pigfoot while drinking Cristol and make it look classy.
Ella: What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader pick it up?
My books are pretty much known for their covers. The fire red cover, shy-yet flirty female and the church steeple are strong images. I also think the title is provocative; Somebody's Sinning in My Bed.
Ella: Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
I want the reader to remember that we're birthed in complexities and need. Life is a journey that will make you or break you. If the reader can remember that God is always in control and whatever you go through...God's got the end already tied up and gift-wrapped for you if you walk in faith. However, one should never play with God; a reprobated mind is a terrible thing to have. And finally, one should never think less of themselves than God does.
Ella: What is the most surprising thing you have learned in creating books?
The most surprising thing I've learned to date is that readers come in all shapes, colors, sizes and persuasions. You cannot please them all and that can be quite sobering if you rely solely on the reader for inspiration. So you must write for you and remain honest in what you write.
Ella: What would you say has been your most significant achievement as a writer?
I believe my most significant achievement as a writer would have to be the across the board, in terms of gender, race, secular and Christian acceptance of my work. It's a great reward in and of itself.
Ella: What advice would you give a new writer?
I would advise a new writer to study their craft, pray often and surround yourself with like-minded people. Also in getting representation make sure they are reputable and don't jump at the first person/agency to say they can make you a star or get your books published.
Ella: Name 3 things that it takes to make a successful author, in your opinion?
Three things that make a successful author in my opinion are: (1) the ability to craft a good story that the reader won't have to read two-three times to get its meaning. (2) Have a marketing plan that is doable and then do it along with prayer. (3) An honest relationship with your editor is key.
Ella: What can we expect from you in the future?
I will have one more book coming out in 2010. It is tentatively titled, "Jessie's Jewels." After that there will be more stories involving Sister Betty and her zany cohorts.
Ella: Share with us your latest news, awards or upcoming book releases.
I'm currently working on my next novel and eagerly awaiting the BEA where Somebody's Sinning in my Bed will debut before it's August 2009 release. Of course, I'm still out and about performing and traveling with my Somewhat Saved Comedy Show.

ONE NIGHT WITH YOU
Prologue/First Chapter Excerpt
Love sometimes needed a helping hand, Ruth Grayson thought as she studied the wedding pictures of her five children on the mantle in her living room. Ruth had taken great pride in seeing that each child found the one person for them to love and be loved in return.
First, there was Luke, the protector and the oldest. For him, Ruth has chosen Catherine Stewart, a noted child psychologist. Catherine possessed a quiet spirit except when it came to championing abused children or her husband. For Morgan, the defender and her second born, the ideal match for him had been Phoenix Bannister, a renowned sculptress, who might appear quiet, but who burned with an inner fire.
Ruth’s gaze moved to the third photo of her middle child, Brandon, the nurturer. The perfect woman for him was Faith McBride. Faith possessed the same warm, caring spirit as the man she adored. Pierce, the thinker and her fourth son, learned there were no rules in love when he fell in love with Sabra Raineau, a Broadway star.
A smile curved Ruth’s mouth upward as she stared at the last photo. Sierra, her youngest child and only daughter, still believed she had chosen her life partner, Blade Navarone, without her mother’s help. It didn't matter. The important thing was that Sierra, gifted with a knack of discernment, had captured the heart and soul of Blade Navarone, the only man whose passion matched hers.
Ruth’s fingers touched the smiling faces of Blade and Sierra, and thanked God and the Master of Breath for keeping them from harm when Sierra was kidnapped. Ruth would forever be grateful to Shane and Rio, the two men in charge of Blade’s security at the time, for their expertise and help in bringing everyone home safely.
Ruth’s gaze moved to the picture of Shane and his smiling bride, Paige Elliott, on the coffee table. After Shane and Rio’s help, Ruth had begun to think that they deserved the same blissful happiness that her children had found. It had only taken Paige’s mother asking Ruth for assistance in keeping Paige from becoming engaged to an unscrupulous man for Ruth to set the wheels in motion to bring Paige and Shane together.
Ruth sighed and thought of Rio - silent, watchful. He would require more in-depth thought and study, but there wasn't a shred of doubt in Ruth’s mind that the woman for Rio was out there, waiting. She and her sister-in-law, Felicia, wouldn't rest until they'd brought the two together.
In the meantime, Ruth had another opportunity to possible give love a helping hand.
She picked up the picture next to Shane and Paige’s, a wedding photo of Cameron McBride and Caitlin Lawrence. The picture included the couple’s cute and precious son, Joshua, the groom’s brother, Duncan, their sister, Faith, and Brandon, and the groom’s divorced parents, Paul and Stella McBride, who stood as far away from the other as possible.
Ruth’s heart went out to Stella. She'd learned too late that the grass wasn't always greener on the other side of the fence. A tough lesson to learn at any age, but particularly daunting for a woman past sixty. Divorcing Paul, as Stella readily admitted to Ruth more than once and again during her unexpected phone call an hour ago, was the worst mistake of her life.
Stella lived with regret each moment of every day. Loneliness, not the man she loved, was her companion. She didn't want the same hopeless existence for her oldest son, Duncan. While Duncan wouldn't take his ex-wife back on a platinum platter, his unhappy marriage hardened his heart toward women in general and love in particular. The McBride family curse - successful in business and unhappy in love – probably wasn't helping him move forward.
Duncan’s brother and sister might have beat the odds, but Ruth could understand as the oldest, he probably thought, looking at his unhappy parents that the family curse couldn't be escaped.
Ruth believed otherwise. It wouldn't be easy to make him see the possibilities instead of the pitfalls. It would take a special woman to stand up to a strong, commanding man like Duncan McBride on his Montana ranch.
The opportunity to do just that had just presented itself. Ruth replaced the photo and moved to the telephone in the kitchen and dialed Raven La Blanc’s number. Brilliant, perceptive and as independent as they came, Raven was a friend and a fellow professor at St. John’s College in Santa Fe. She had once told Ruth that she wanted stability and permanence more than anything in the world.
Raven needed to learn that security wasn't always a place.
“Hello.”
Ruth straightened. Time would tell if she was able to help another mother’s plea to aid her child. “Raven, its Ruth. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity just presented itself and I immediately thought of you.”

The Tragedy and Triumph of the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson hailed “King of Pop” in the spotlight since the tender age of five; the world watched on as he lived a life of stardom and glamour as well as uphill battles and undoubtedly inside struggles. This Pop Icon crafted a legacy of his own with over the top record breaking hits, a fan base surpassing that of his predecessors, and a self proclaimed promise that he would be the greatest that ever lived. So what finally occurred on his journey through life that caused his dreams to be short lived? No matter what we experience in life whether exhilarating or death defying, at the end of the day there is something that you have to face, yourSELF.
No one said it better than Michael, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror, I’m asking him to change his ways.”
This song and many more revealed the quest that Jackson and millions of human beings often embark upon in the middle of life’s journey. The objective, “Take a look at yourSELF.” Not your neighbor, your boss, your children, or your parents; we all have to come to a point in our lives’ when we take an introspective look at who we are and where we’re heading. Once that inspection is complete it is up to you to, “Make a change.”
Constantly under the media’s scrutiny, harassed and criticized for who he did not choose to be, Jackson’s journey through life was anything but stress free! “I’m going to end up just like Elvis Presley” was his fear, evidence enough that his demons were lurking, threatening to take him before his time should have been. Or was it? Was the life of Michael Jackson a sacrifice for you and I revealing the demons that we disguise and make believe don’t exist?
In my memoir, “The Journey Less Traveled: Choose to Turn Your Tragedy into Triumph” is an interactive journal called, Seven Steps to Developing a Conquerors Mentality. Step Six: Recognize Lesson Learned, teaches the reader how to take a tragic situation and embrace the opportunity to learn and grow from its occurrence. So the “King of Pop” is no longer with us but he left behind a lifetime of memories. In order to move forward from any tragedy we have to embrace its reality. Given the opportunity to live your life differently, think about what you now know and implement how you choose to live and grow.
I would like to highlight, “Lessons of Tragedy and Triumph” from the life and death of “The King of Pop” Michael Jackson:
1. Always find time to invest in our future generation
2. Never give a deaf ear to wisdom and advice from your loved ones and trusted friends
3. Every chance you get always tell others of your love and appreciation for them
4. When you see yourself going down the road to destruction humbly shift gears in an attempt to change your direction
5. Use your God given skills and talents to inspire the world
6. Money is power, but becomes a weakness when used to define who you are
7. Love your mother because you only get one and when time permits give her your all
8. Take the time to heal from past hurts and disappointments, because untreated wounds can lead to an infection
9. There is a call to greatness in each one of us, but it’s up to you to answer the call
10. Whenever life knocks you down, never stop dreaming and attempt to get back up
Life is our greatest teacher, but I believe that there are some destinations that could be avoided if we choose to learn from others mistakes. We don’t have to be strung up in a hospital room with an intravenous tube in our arm to understand that inhaling a mixture of chemical toxins can cause not only an altered state of being, but possibly lead to death. Unfortunately, everyone does not survive tragedy. But as a survivor of any tragic event, you are given a chance to take your experience, learn and grow, then help someone else.

Sibling Rivalry at Its Finest
by Azarel
Got a sister? Got a brother? If so, you probably can testify to a few low-key feuds over the years. And some folk…well maybe a couple of jabs here and there. What about murder? Yes, I said it…Murder! It’s been done before more than you’ll ever know. Family melt-downs go back to the beginning of time. Think about Cain and Abel, Marsha and Janet Brady, or even Latoya and Janet Jackson.
Of course we hear about sibling celebrity feuds nowadays since every Tom, Dick, and Harry wants to be the paparazzi. Let’s take the Olsen twins, Mary Kate and Ashley. They have billions, yet still have that contention and competition amongst themselves. Now one lives on the West coast and the other on the East. The one thing they have over the rest of us…they have billions to fuss over, most of us don’t.
Sibling rivalry is just something that can’t be erased. If you’re human, chances are you have some crazy stories that come to mind. Do you want what he or she has? Jealous about how they look? Didn’t get your Mama’s shape…ended up with your Dad’s instead? What about being pissed because you are the sibling who didn’t go to college, or the sibling who can’t keep a good paying job?
Oh, and what about your love life. Are you the one upset because your brother or sister stole your man? Yep, I said it. This day in time you never know. You gotta watch your mate with both sexes. But let’s focus on sisters for a moment. Sister rifts are torturous; especially in black women. I’m sure you’re familiar with the saying, “Don’t let me take off my earrings”.
Well in 2009, we don’t just fight anymore. What about, “I will kill you!” Well for now, ingest what I’ve just said. Let author, publisher, Azarel take you behind the scenes and finish the rest in Carbon Copy, a new novel exposing Sibling Rivalry at its Finest.

The Making of In the Land of Cotton by Martha A. Taylor
Hello Martha! It is such a pleasure to have you on The Black Authors Network author's tour. The Give the Gift of Knowledge tour is used to expand the variety of books that our readers receive each month. Your book is a welcomed edition. Tell us a little about you and your passion for writing.
MAT: I am a sixty year old grandmother of four. My writing career, until the last few years, has been one of those “don’t quit your day job arrangements”. I am a tax professional who discovered early on that my creative writing skills came in handy when writing client letters to the IRS. My passion for writing becomes evident in my books. It is a blessed opportunity to give birth to a character and watch them grow throughout the development of the story.
Introduce us to the story behind the book, In the Land of Cotton:
MAT: As a child growing up in Memphis I could not have known that the Boyd family, the main characters in In the Land of Cotton, would have such a haunting effect on me. Last fall, their indelible personas became overwhelming. They were all I could think about. I sat down one afternoon and the book began to flow to paper. I still had vivid memories of Cypress Grove, a primitive farm the Boyd family had lived on since the days of the Civil War. They had no electricity, no running water and certainly no refrigeration yet they wanted for nothing. It was a step back in time but, as a child, I wanted to be part of that. As the reader journeys through the 1960's, they travel along side the Boyd family as they experience the historic events of that decade. You will find as a reader that you will become immediately vested in the characters. The Boyd's have the voice for every Black American that lived through those turbulent times.
We would like to explore some of the Intimate moments in the book. Read on as Martha takes us inside.
Martha, in your own words, tell us why this book was meant to be written.
MAT: In the Land of Cotton is a provocative and emotional chronicle of a young, inquisitive white girl coming of age in the color divided South of the fifties and sixties. My story places you smack dab in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement. It’s a heart-felt journey through American history that weaves a tale of forbidden friendships, misconceptions and human nature… human nature at its best and worst.
After all of these years I suddenly became compelled to write the story of Silas and his family. I wanted this new generation to know that it hasn’t been that long since black families lived in seclusion with no electricity…no running water or sanitation…no telephones or refrigeration. My heart is always in my words as I define that sole-mates are forever and true love..really is colorblind. I wanted to remind the people of my generation of how long this journey has been; and to the younger generations, I wanted to present a time capsule of events so they would never forget the anguish, fear and tremendous sacrifices of their ancestors. In light of this year’s Presidential Election, In the Land of Cotton defines a beacon of hope for any individual, who has ever felt different or longed for more out of life.
Did Silas share your feelings and deep emotional bond? Was there a sense that time was short for you and the Boyds? Did you feel complete racial equality would ever be realized?
Thank you Martha for sharing with us! How may the readers contact you?
